Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Linn County Fair. We enjoyed talking to you about your dogs.
Many of you expressed the misconception that your senior dogs no longer require training. However, veterinary and behavior experts emphasize the vital role that training and mental stimulation play for dogs of all ages, including those in their golden years.
Benefits of Training for Senior Dogs
Just like humans, dogs experience cognitive decline as they age. Regular training sessions can help slow this decline, improving their overall well-being. Training also provides:
Mental enrichment: Keeps their minds sharp and active and provides relaxation. Mental exercise is far more tiring than physical. Plus, it takes pressure off of their body which could have pain unbeknownst to you.
Improved socialization skills: Helps them interact more confidently with other dogs and people.
Strengthened bond with their people: Builds trust and communication.

Types of Training for Senior Dogs
Back to the Basics: Refreshes verbal cues and hand signals such as sit, stay, come, and heel.
Agility training: Low-impact exercises that promote coordination and flexibility.
Nose work: Stimulates their sense of smell and provides mental challenges as well as relieves stress.
Trick training: Teaches them new skills, such as rolling over or shaking hands, which enhances their cognitive function.
Swimming Sports: Provides low-impact aerobic physical exercise which improves muscle and joint function. Mentally, it relieves stress and adds joy if they love being in water. Dock diving is fantastic for combining both mental and physical enrichment

Mental Stimulation for Senior Dogs
In addition to training, mental stimulation is crucial for senior dogs to keep them alert, aware of and comfortable in their surroundings, and happy. Activities that engage their minds include:
Sniffaris: Allow them to explore new scents and environments either on a long leash or off-leash in a secured area. Check out this local Sniffspot: Memphis’ Meadow.
Games: Play fetch, find the cookies, or hide-and-seek. Create your own!
Puzzles: Provide treat-dispensing toys that challenge their problem-solving abilities.
Playtime: Engage them in interactive play sessions with toys or other dogs.
